PTO Kings Wish List!! Your generosity is moving and we are putting
donations to use right away. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you!!!

Fourth Grade Reminders:
On Wednesday, December 19th fourth graders can wear their pajamas to school.  They will be completing a STEM Math activity by creating gingerbread houses that can stand on their own.  Students are going to flashlight read during reading so please send your child to school with flashlight.

On Thursday, December 20th fourth graders will have their checkbook party.  We will celebrate with hot chocolate and a movie. At 2:00 we will perform our holiday dance in the gym.  We hope that you can make it to this fun performance.

There is no school on Friday, December 21st.  Winter break is  December 21st - January 6th.   School resumes on Monday, January 7th.  Have a safe and restful break!

Locker Clean Out and Lost and Found
We will be cleaning out lockers this week. It is amazing how many articles of clothing and plastic containers accumulate in the student lockers! Hopefully you will be seeing some familiar items coming home. Also, please encourage your child to check the lost and found, as there are quite a few items there that have lost their owners.

November 2018

Happy Thanksgiving!  All of us wish our students and families a very happy and restful Thanksgiving break.  School will be closed Wednesday, November 21 through Friday, November 22 for Thanksgiving.  We look forward to seeing students back at school on Monday, November 26.

Reminder from the Office
Please refrain from sending party invitations with students to school to pass out to friends.  While we this is convenient, please understand the conflict it can create for those who may not be invited.  We ask that you refer to the PTO student/family directory distributed at the beginning of the school year to send those invitations and thank yous.  If you are unsure as to how to access the directory, please contact the PTO for access information.  You can contact them through the link on the sidebar or by clicking HERE.

PTO Events
There are several events on the PTO calendar this month.  You can find all PTO events by clicking HERE.   School parties will be on December 20th -- if you are a room parent, teachers will be in contact with you to make specific arrangements.

It's Cold Outside!

Please remember to coats, hats and gloves to be prepared for outdoor recess.  Our recess is time is not until 1:10, so while it may be below 32 degrees for earlier recesses, it is often warm enough by the time 4th grade recess rolls around.

Quarter #2!

And just like that, we have now completed one quarter of 4th grade.   As we begin the second quarter, here are some things to note:

Art To Remember!
This past week in art class, students took home a personalized order form for Art to Remember.  This is a school art fundraiser that helps raise money for art supplies.  It also makes amazing gifts! SLE students have been busy creating their art in class.  The artwork is scanned and can be printed on a mug, garden flag, tshirt, night light, plate etc.

There are two ways to order.  You can go online to https://order.arttoremember.com/ and put your child's online order code or you can send cash or check in with the order form to Mrs. Hoffert.  Online is the best way and quickest way to order.  Your online code will be on the back of your student's order form.
Order this now!
order.arttoremember.com
Type in online order code located on order form. Select keepsake.  Add to cart and check out.
All order forms or online orders are due October 17, 2018.

Parent / Teacher Conferences
Conferences will be held on Thursday, October 18th, Tuesday, Oct 23rd and Thursday, October 25th from 4-7:30 each night.  We look forward to meeting with you at your scheduled time.  If you did not receive the Sign-Up Genius link to reserve your conference time, please contact your child's teacher.

Book Fair!!
Students will visit the book fair during their regularly scheduled library times during the week of October 22nd.    Again this year, you will have the opportunity to shop our Book Fair online until Oct. 31.  To access the order site, click HERE.  Family Night is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 24. Click HERE to see the 2018 book fair flyer.  Click HERE to view the book fair video. (Note there are 2 videos --- K-3 and 4-6.  Please use parental discretion when sharing with your child as website states that some parts of the 4-6 video may not be appropriate for grades K-3)

D.A.R.E.
Once again this year, we are excited that we are able to provide 4th grade students with an introduction to the D.A.R.E. program  This is a scaled down (age appropriate) version of what they will receive in later grades.  The D.A.R.E. officer will be visiting us for the next several Fridays, talking with students about making smart, safe decisions.

Behavior Checkbooks
If you hear your child talking about their checkbook at school, they have not recently opened a bank account that you do not know about, but instead are referring to our classroom behavior system.  Students will receive an "allowance" each week.  The goal is to keep all of their allowance and add to their "bank account" through positive behavior -- acts of kindness, responsibility, respect, etc.   However, they must also avoid losing money -- things like coming unprepared for class, not following class/school rules, forgetting or losing homework or materials will result in deductions in their checkbooks.  Students are excited about watching their "bank accounts" grow through the quarter.  At the end of the quarter, "money" will be cashed in for participation in a special event.

Other Dates to Note
Friday, October 19 - Vehicle Day
Friday, October 19 - Report Cards go home
October 27 - 4-6pm on the SLE track - Track Or Treat
October 31  - Fall Class Parties (Thank you homeroom parents for coordinating!)

Art
Start with Hello Week September 24-28th   - School wide Mural
Students will be participating in Start with Hello activities all week. (Sept. 24-28th)  One activity is the school wide mural that SLE students are going to create in Art class. Each student will be pledging their commitment to Start with Hello by putting their hand print on our mural.
We need your help!
Please send in an old large t-shirt that they can throw over their clothes when they go to art the Week of September 24.
We will be using permanent Acrylic paint for the mural.
What is Start with Hello?
This program enables students to make a difference with their peers in a simple, fun, and impactful way by encouraging them to take small but powerful actions to promote connectedness and inclusion, and to identify and help others who are showing signs of social isolation.

Headphones/Earbuds Needed
Image result for headphones for kids clipart freeMany of the computer programs we use in both language arts and math have sound. In order for students to get the most of these programs, we want students to be able to hear the programs but also not be distracted by others who may be at a different place with the same or similar program.  It is for this reason that we are asking students to have headphones/earbuds to use at school. If you child does not have a set, we ask that you please provide a set for him/her to use at school. This does not have to be a new set -- an extra set from home is fine. We provide bags for easy storage and students keep these in their lockers when we are not using them.

No School
Friday, September 21st
Staff Inservice Day

PTO Walkathon will be on Friday, Sept. 28.  This is a great fundraiser for the PTO and funds raised will help PTO provide for theatrical programs, classroom technology, and fund many special projects that make SLE such a great school. Pledge envelopes can be turned in every Thursday.

HEALTH HEROES—FLU VACCINE
Please remember to sign and return your child's consent form for the flu vaccine which will be administered district-wide by Health Heroes on Monday, October 1. Contact Mrs. Wiethe, School Nurse at extension 15025 if you have any questions.

Great Start and News Items

The year seems to be off to a great start!  We wanted to make you aware of a few news items over the next couple of weeks....

We understand that children have different preferences on the style, and either headphones or simple earbuds will work with the Chromebooks in the classroom.  If you child does not have a set, we ask that you please provide a set for him/her to use at school.  This does not have to be a new set -- an extra set from home is fine.  We provide bags for easy storage and students keep these in their lockers when we are not using them.

Fees and Forms
Please note that school fees are $77 for the 2018-2019 school year. Checks should be made payable to KINGS LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT.

Also, if you do not have your emergency medical forms turned in, please turn those in as soon as possible.  It is important that we have up to date contact information in the event we would need to contact you during the school day.

On Friday, information was sent home for families that are not connected to Progress Book.  This is our online grading system where you can view your child's grades.  If you have questions on how to do this, or if you have misplaced directions or login information, please contact the SLE main office for assistance.

Music Notes

Information will be sent home soon with students interested in 4th grade chorus. If your child is interested and does not receive an information sheet, please contact either your child's homeroom teacher or Mrs. Sherby. 4th grade chorus will begin on Wednesday, September 19.

4th grade is the year of the recorder!   All 4th grade students will be learning to play recorder this year.   Recorders are $6 and money is due to Mrs. Sherby by September 17.  In addition to the money for recorder, students need a hard-backed 1-inch binder.  Most students brought this on the first day of school and we are storing them in their lockers until recorders arrive.  If you did not purchase your child a music binder, please do so that he/she is ready to go when recorder instruction begins.

Specials Rotation
So far students are doing a great job remembering which day they have which special. It is important to remember gym shoes on phys. ed. days and for library books to be brought to school on library days. Unsure of which color day it is?  Check your child's planner to confirm which day is which color.  There is an all-year specials rotation calendar posted HERE.

MAP Testing
Kings Local Schools will again be using MAP Testing as our universal screening tool this year to gather baseline and growth data in the areas of literacy and math for all K-4 students. This is a computer based tool that will provide our data. Teachers will be using this data to determine what instruction students are ready to learn and will be administered 3 times per year. Our first MAP testing, which will gives us baseline data, will begin this week.

Welcome Class of 2027!

Welcome to 4th Grade!!
Welcome to 4th grade and to the SLE 4th grade website!  Please take some time to look around and bookmark our site.  Here on our main page you will find general news items for the entire 4th grade.  Across the top you will see tabs (pull down menu if you are on a mobile device) for the individual teachers.   It is here that you will find information on what is going on in the different academic areas.   There are also buttons that will connect you to the Kings Local Website, Progress Book and SLE PTO.

Healthy Snack Time

Due to the late time for 4th grade lunch (12:50), we allow students to have a small, healthy snack mid-morning.  Snacks should be something that can be eaten in 10-15 minutes, healthy and due to the many allergies we ask that all snacks be nut free.

Also, new this year, no homemade baked goods are allowed as snacks in the classroom.

Examples of snacks allowed would be:
  • fruit (apples, bananas, grapes and strawberries are good choices)
  • carrot or other vegetable sticks
  • cheese cubes
  • goldfish (or similar) crackers
  • pretzels
  • crackers / graham crackers
  • small yogurt (note we do not have refrigeration & please send a spoon as we do not have these in the classrooms)

Items that are NOT allowed in classroom for snack:
  • granola bars
  • trail mix
  • home baked goods
  • potato chips / Cheetos / Doritos / etc.

Busy Time of Year!

The upcoming weeks are super busy at SLE -- please check your child's Friday Folder for important reminders.

1. Scholastic Book Fair
Mrs. Burkholder reports SLE had another successful book fair, this years totals topped that of last spring.  What is so wonderful about this is money earned during the fair goes to buying books for the SLE library.  The book selection was excellent this time and if you did not get a chance to shop and still would like to, the online fair is open until 4/24/18.  You can access the SLE Book Fair online page by clicking HERE.

 2. ARMCO Park Field Trip
Earlier this week it was only sunshine in the forecast but now there is a little chance of rain.  Keep your fingers crossed that it stays dry from 10-1, but please prepare your child for being out side on Monday.   Here are a few additional reminders....

- While at the park, we will eat a picnic lunch in the picnic area.  There will be no place to buy lunch, they must bring a bagged lunch. (Unless you ordered a brown bag lunch from the cafeteria) Lunch should be either disposable or they must carry with them the whole day.
- Students should also bring a bookbag(or smaller backpack) with sunscreen (please apply some before going to school), filled water bottle, and a towel (for picnic lunch - there are very few tables and most will eat on the ground).

3. AIR finished BUT school is not over!.
Students did an excellent job the last two weeks taking the Ohio AIR tests. The tests are long and require the students to focus and then be quiet while others finish during the 75-90 minute testing blocks. This is not always easy for 4th graders and they did an awesome job!

We are proud of them but remind them too that those tests were a state requirement and school at SLE is not over until May 22nd. We will attempt to stay on course with routines and behaviors despite many end of the year interruptions. There are still things to learn! Thank you for your continued support in keeping your child focused and on task.
4. Etiquette
The annual 4th grade Etiquette Lunch at River's Bend is scheduled for Friday, May 11. The invitation went home today so that you can plan. The students will need to dress nice that day. Boys should wear a collared shirt and pants that are not jeans or sports pants. Girls should wear dresses, skirt outfits or a nice outfit with pants. T-shirts and sports wear are not appropriate for this event. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher.

5. ALL STUDENT ART SHOW AND SALE
Our annual All Student Art Show and Sale is May 2nd. Each student at SLE will have their artwork framed and on display in the cafeteria. There is an option to buy the frame at the show if you would like. There is no admission fee for the art show. This is a school fundraiser in which part of the proceeds go to the Art Department to purchase art supplies.

Mrs. Hoffert is in need of volunteers to make this event a success.  If you can lend a hand, please contact Mrs. Hoffert at shoffert@kingslocal.net.  Helpers needed the following times:

6. All District 4th Grade Chorus Concert DATE CHANGE
Please mark your calendars for the All District 4th Grade Chorus Concert.  Due to unforseen conflicts the date for this concert is now Thursday, May 17 at 8pm at the KHS auditorium.  Concert members need to arrive to the KHS Choir room at 6:45 in their concert attire (black and white chorus uniform).  This is such a great event that connects our 3 elementary schools.  We are so proud of our 4th grade singers!

7. 4th Grade Awards Assembly
4th grade will be honored on Tuesday, May 22nd.  Please arrive to SLE around 1:30 for the Awards Ceremony followed by the Recorder Concert.  the ceremony should end around 2:45.

Please remember you will need to check in with a photo ID at the office and that parking will be tight as this occurs during the school day.  While you may park in the side bus lot during ht ceremony, all cars must be cleared from this area by 3pm so that buses may park to transport students home.  Thank you for your cooperation.
