April Updates

Columbia Intermediate Parent Input Forms
In the Friday Folders this past week (April 10) the Parent Input Forms were sent home for class placement at Columbia Intermediate.  This is your chance to communicate the needs of your child prior to class placement for 5th grade.  Please take the time to fill out the form and return to school by April 20.

Mark your calendar for Monday, May 18 at 6:30pm  --- this will be the Columbia Intermediate Parent Information meeting.  The meeting will be in the Columbia Intermediate Cafeteria.  We encourage you to attend this meeting as this will help you help your child in the transition from 4th to 5th grade.

This is a very exciting time for your child.   The transition can also cause some anxiety.  To assist students in this transition, classes will be visiting CIS the week of May 18 for a tour and interaction with a 5th grade class.  Look for more specific information as the date approaches.

Testing News
PARCC Testing will continue this week.  We thank you for your support in getting the students to school on time this week so that we could begin testing sessions on time. The students have been great in rolling with the changes in schedule and working during the testing times.   There was a minor network problem Friday morning, but we adjusted to test in the afternoon and the students applied themselves and worked hard.  Please keep encouraging them to not stress but show their best.  We are so lucky to have such outstanding fourth graders.  The remaining testing dates are:
Monday, March 9th: Social Studies (75 minutes)
Wednesday, March 11th: ELA Unit 3 (60 minutes)
Friday, March 13th: Math Unit 1 (80 minutes)
Monday, March 16th: Math Unit 2 (70 minutes)
Testing Tips:
  1. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before testing.
  2. Please make sure your child eats a healthy breakfast the morning of testing.
  3. Please tell your child to just try their best and not stress out over these tests.

February Updates

To assist parents in understanding the upcoming PARCC Assessments, we have scheduled an information night.

Tuesday, February 3, 2015
6-7pm
SLE Science Lab
We will go over:
  • what the specific assessments include
  • how PARCC differs from previously given OAA tests
  • how tests will be administered
  • what parents can do to help your child prepare

Please mark your calendar and we hope to see you there.

The 4th grade will have an optional Valentine's Day card exchange with students in their homerooms on Tuesday, February 10 at the end of the day.  This will not be a party, but a simple card exchange.  If students wish to participate, they should bring cards for classmates in their homeroom class (ready to be passed out) on that day.

SLE Student Council now has a school supply store open for 3rd and 4th graders on Monday and Wednesday mornings.   The supplies are not quite as plentiful as you see above, but there are pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, glue sticks and notebooks for sale.   Supplies are all under $1 -- if you have difficulty getting to the store and your student needs to restock something, this is now an option available to them.

Please remember that we monitor the temperature daily to determine whether or not students will be going outside for recess.  4th grade recess us not until 1:15, so it is possible some days our students will go out when earlier recess times had to be indoor.   Because of these daily changes, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather with heavy coats, hats and gloves.

Starting in February the E-Club will be kicking off our 2015 NO WASTE LUNCH CAMPAIGN!!!   We're looking for students at lunch who are doing their best to use reusable containers! The less waste, the better!!!  Check out the commercial we created in 2013 to kick off our efforts!
