February Updates

To assist parents in understanding the upcoming PARCC Assessments, we have scheduled an information night.

Tuesday, February 3, 2015
6-7pm
SLE Science Lab
We will go over:
  • what the specific assessments include
  • how PARCC differs from previously given OAA tests
  • how tests will be administered
  • what parents can do to help your child prepare

Please mark your calendar and we hope to see you there.

The 4th grade will have an optional Valentine's Day card exchange with students in their homerooms on Tuesday, February 10 at the end of the day.  This will not be a party, but a simple card exchange.  If students wish to participate, they should bring cards for classmates in their homeroom class (ready to be passed out) on that day.

SLE Student Council now has a school supply store open for 3rd and 4th graders on Monday and Wednesday mornings.   The supplies are not quite as plentiful as you see above, but there are pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, glue sticks and notebooks for sale.   Supplies are all under $1 -- if you have difficulty getting to the store and your student needs to restock something, this is now an option available to them.

Please remember that we monitor the temperature daily to determine whether or not students will be going outside for recess.  4th grade recess us not until 1:15, so it is possible some days our students will go out when earlier recess times had to be indoor.   Because of these daily changes, please make sure your child is dressed for the weather with heavy coats, hats and gloves.

Starting in February the E-Club will be kicking off our 2015 NO WASTE LUNCH CAMPAIGN!!!   We're looking for students at lunch who are doing their best to use reusable containers! The less waste, the better!!!  Check out the commercial we created in 2013 to kick off our efforts!

Update - January 19, 2015

REPORT CARDS
2nd Quarter Report Cards were sent home this past week in Friday Folders.  Please take time to go over your child's report card and discuss it with your child.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.

We have set the 3rd Quarter behavior goal.  For the 3rd Quarter, students may not miss more that 2 Freaky Fridays -- that means they can have no more than 2 missing or late assignments.   We have noticed several students had difficulty getting back in the habit of homework after winter break.  We ask that you please work with your child to assist him/her in organizing and scheduling homework time.

Hey parents!  In art class, our students are busy creating beautiful artworks.  These artworks are going to be used for the fundraiser program Art to Remember.  Student artworks can be printed on bags, coffee mugs, book marks etc.  All items purchased by students will help our school and art program raise money to buy art supplies. Order forms will be passed out in art class in early March.  Thanks for your support.

Happy 2015!

We hope you all had a fun winter break!   A few items of which we would like you to take note:

Reminder that to reduce paper usage all information from the 4th grade team can be found right here on our website.   Each teacher has a page (tabs at the top) for class specific info and you can find our contact info there as well.  We ask that you bookmark this site and check it weekly to stay up to date on the happenings in 4th grade at SLE.  You may scan the qr code below to make bookmarking our site even easier!

Supply Check - this is a good time of year to check your child's school supplies for both quality and quantity.  Some students still have supplies in their extras bags, but we have noted shortages in the following:
GLUE STICKS
PENCILS
SCISSORS
3-SUBJECT NOTEBOOKS (many are full)

End of the Quarter is this Friday, January 9.

Etiquette Training - We are so excited that our students will again be participating in etiquette training.   Please ask them about what they are learning and encourage them to practice their good manners at home.

January 19  - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - No School

Reminder of Change in Testing this Year:
This year, students in grades 3-4 will participate in new state assessments to measure their language arts, math and fourth grade social studies achievement. There area two types of assessments that are required to be given: Performance Based Assessment (PBA) which will be given at about the 75% completion mark of the school year and End of Year (EOY) which will be given around the 90% mark.
We will schedule PBA assessments sometime during the testing window of March 2nd-20th and EOY assessments between April 13-May 15. All assessments will be taken online using a district-owned device. Once we have the exact dates for each grade, we will communicate that information. We hope this advance information is helpful as you plan and schedule appointments.

PRE-APPROVED REQUESTS FORMS WILL NOT BE HONORED DURING THE TESTING DATES. Also, we ask you to please try to avoid school-hour appointments during these dates as well. Thank you for your assistance in this matter.
