Welcome 2017!

Happy New Year!   From all of us at SLE, we hope you had a restful winter break and are ready for a great 2nd semester!

End of Quarter News

Please note that 2nd Quarter grade cards will come home today (Friday, Jan. 6) in the Friday Folder. You will also find a copy of your child's latest MAP scores.
We do not have parent-teacher conferences at the end of the 2nd Quarter, but if you have any questions or concerns about the grade card or MAP report, please contact your child's teacher.

Brrrrr!

Well, it looks like winter has arrived to South Lebanon! Just a reminder that if the temperature is around 30 degrees, students will go outside for recess. Please make sure your child wears appropriate clothes (no shorts), a winter coat and has a hat and gloves in the event recess is held outside.

Also -- as another weather reminder -- if school is canceled or delayed due to weather, the district will do an all-call as well as send out texts (if you are signed up for this) and post on their website the details of delay or closing.

Supply Check Up

Please check the status of your child's classroom supplies.  We do have extras in their extras bags, but many are running low on pencils, erasers and glue sticks. It is also a good time to make sure binders are still holding together as they can take quite a beating and by January sometimes need to be replaced.

Supply Help!

This year we are using dry erase markers in both reading and math.  Due to the increase if usage, many of our markers have dried up. If you are able, we would greatly appreciate the donation of low-odor dry erase markers. Thank you!

3rd Quarter Goal and Behavior System

For the 3rd Quarter, we will again focus on homework (like 1st quarter).   Students will be expected to make 7 of the 9 Freaky Friday Recesses (earned when all homework is turned in complete and on time) to make this goal.

This quarter, we will also begin a new 4th grade behavior system. Today, students received a checkbook to keep track of their 4th Grade Dollars. Each week, students will receive an allowance and will have opportunities for earning extra money for going above and beyond. Students will have to pay money from their checkbook for things like coming to class unprepared, name on the board, no name on paper, etc.   At the end of the quarter, students will use their money to buy a "ticket" to a grade level party. Those students who do not have enough money in their account to purchase the ticket will not be allowed to attend the party and will have an alternate assignment. Full details on the checkbook program can be found in today's Friday Folder.

Social Studies and Science

Due to the large number of objectives in 4th grade social studies, for the majority of the 3rd quarter all students will receive social studies instruction from Mrs. Scruby and Mrs. Westley.  This instruction must be given before the AIR test that is in April.  Science instruction will resume 4th quarter.

November Notes

Thank you!
Thank you to the parents who met with us the past two weeks. We enjoyed meeting with you to discuss your child's successes and make plans to assist your child where they need to grow.  As always, your partnership makes for a more successful year for your child.

Reminder - No School
There will be no school on Tuesday, November 8th for Teacher Inservice Day.

Veteran's Day at SLE

We are excited to honor our veterans on Friday, November 11.  As part of our celebration, we are asking students to bring in 2 pieces of their Halloween candy to send to those currently serving in our armed forces.  Donations can be turned in through Thursday, November 10.

Electronics Policy
Image result for kids with electronic devices free clipartWe have noticed more and more students with electronic devices at school (iPhones, personal game systems etc).  The school policy is that any electronic device is to remain in the child's backpack during the school day unless specifically told by a teacher to have it out.    We understand that many students have long bus rides and may need them in the event they get home and no one is there.   However, at school, we expect these devices to be put away.   Please note that the lockers at SLE do not lock and are located in the hall out of direct line of sight.   Our advice is to leave these devices at home unless absolutely necessary.

Book Fair
SLE Book Fair was a great success this past week.  Thank you to Mrs. Burkholder for organizing such a spectacular event for our students!  If you would still like to make a purchase, the online book fair will run thought November 1st.  You can access the online fair by clicking HERE.

Specials Schedule Rotation
Just a reminder that you can access a list of the color of the day, which determines our specials class, if you click the SPECIALS tab at the top of the page.   Students must have library books on library days, recorders and music binders on music days and in order to participate in gym class are required to wear gym shoes.
