Walk-A-Thon Turn-In Day - THURSDAYS - Please continue to bring in pledges.  All money raised stays right here at SLE to purchase items for the school such as technology devices, books, and sponsor grade level projects. Such a great cause! Please consider donating if you have not already done so.  Walk-A-Thon is Friday, September 29th. Cross your fingers for good weather!!!

Spiritwear Is Still Available
Image result for spirit wearIf you did not get to order SLE SPIRITWEAR, but would like too, for some items you still can get them through the Cincinnati Team Apparel website.  Not all items are available, but some are. You can access the website by clicking HERE and scroll down on the left side to Kings SLE

Earbuds / Earphones Needed
It has come to our attention that many of our students do not have earbuds/earphones.  Students are using Chromebooks daily for various learning purposes and some of the programs they use, to get the most of them, use sound. If possible, we are asking that you provide these for your child.

You may have heard your child talk about the Experience Day that is coming up this Friday. This is the first Experience Day this year and they will occur every 15 days. PBIS is our building wide positive behavior system which encourages students to be respectful, responsible, safe and problem solvers.  For students that meet the positive behavior goals, they will get to go to a teacher in the building with a multi-age student group to learn about something new from that teacher.  It may be a hobby, a skill, a sport or a place in the world.  Those who do not meet the goals this time will go to a reset room that will be staffed with teachers, our counselor and Mr. Winebrenner, to make new goals for the next 15 days. The focus will be to make positive changes so that the student may participate in the next 15 day round of experiences.  We are super excited to offer this to our students this year! The criteria for earning experiences this quarter are:
1) Turn in 80% of homework completed and on time
2) No unexcused absences
3) No bus or office referrals

HEALTH HEROES—FLU VACCINE
Please remember to sign and return your child's consent form for the flu vaccine which will be administered district-wide by Health Heroes on Monday, September 25. Contact Mrs. Wiethe, School Nurse at extension 15025 if you have any questions.

Great Start!

It was so nice to meet so many of you at Parent Orientation last week. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to come meet with us.  We view our partnership with you as a very important part of your child's success this year. Thank you in advance for working with us!

Thank you to the parents who came in last minute on Monday to lend a hand with the eclipse viewing.  Such an exciting event and hearing the "awww...wow!" from the kids was priceless!  I think all will remember where they were August 21, 2017 -- that is until the next eclipse in 2024 when we will be closer to the path of totality.

School Fees
Please note that school fees are due by September 8th and are $77for the 2017-2018 school year. Checks should be made payable to KINGS LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT.

Music Notes
Information will be sent home soon with students interested in 4th grade chorus. If your child is interested and does not receive an information sheet, please contact either your child's homeroom teacher or Mrs. Sherby.

4th grade is the year of the recorder!   All 4th grade students will be learning to play recorder this year.   Recorders are $6 and money is due to Mrs. Sherby by September 18th. Money may be sent in any day (do not have to wait until a day your student has music) and it will be sent to Mrs. Sherby.

Please check out all the important music dates found on our "Important Dates" tab at the top of this page.

Specials Rotation
So far students are doing a great job remembering which day they have which special. It is important to remember gym shoes on phys. ed. days and for library books to be brought to school on library days. Unsure of which color day it is?  Check your child's planner to confirm which day is which color.  We hope to have a full year calendar to you soon.

MAP Testing

Kings Local Schools will again be using MAP Testing as our universal screening tool this year to gather baseline and growth data in the areas of literacy and math for all K-4 students. This is a computer based tool that will provide our data. Teachers will be using this data to determine what instruction students are ready to learn and will be administered 3 times per year. Our first MAP testing, which will give us baseline data, will begin this week. Students are scheduled to take the reading test on Monday morning, Clements/Westley students will take Math on Wednesday and Tucker/Scruby/Caskey students will take Math on Wednesday, Sept. 6. All tests will be administered in the morning.

Conference Date Addition
This year, fourth grade will have 3 conference nights in fall.  We have added an additional night to accommodate all parents so that parents may meet with their child's instructional team, rather than just one teacher.  While conference info will not be coming home for a while, we wanted to make you aware of this change.   Conference dates for SLE fourth grade will be:
Thursday, October 19
Tuesday, October 24
Thursday, October 26

THANK YOU!!
Thank you for following the new snack policy.  Students have enjoyed their healthy snacks this past week to help get through the long morning.

Art on Twitter
Are you on Twitter?  If so, Mrs. Hoffert asks that you take time to follow her art page as she will be posting updates from the art room on Twitter this year.  She can be found at @hoffert_stacy

Welcome to 4th Grade!

Welcome!
We are so excited to back for another great year at South Lebanon Elementary. 4th grade is a little different this year with 5 teachers!  This year we have 2 4th grade teams and one self-contained classroom.  Mrs. Scruby and Mrs. Tucker will be teaming together and Mrs. Westley and Mrs. Clements will make up another team. We welcome Mrs. Caskey to Kings Local as she will be our 4th grade self contained classroom.

Mark your calendar!
Parent Orientation is set for Monday, August 21st from 6:30-7:30 in the SLE cafeteria.

Healthy Snack Time

Due to the late time for 4th grade lunch (12:50), we allow students to have a small, healthy snack mid-morning.  Snacks should be something that can be eaten in 10-15 minutes, healthy and due to the many allergies we ask that all snacks be nut free.

Also, new this year, no homemade baked goods are allowed as snacks in the classroom.

Examples of snacks allowed would be:
  • fruit (apples, bananas, grapes and strawberries are good choices)
  • carrot or other vegetable sticks
  • cheese cubes
  • goldfish (or similar) crackers
  • pretzels
  • crackers / graham crackers
  • small yogurt (note we do not have refrigeration & please send a spoon as we do not have these in the classrooms)

Items that are NOT allowed in classroom for snack:

  • granola bars
  • trail mix
  • home baked goods
  • potato chips / Cheetos / Doritos / etc.
  • Any item that contains nuts, nut butters or seeds

For more information about food allowed at school, please refer to the new the Kings Approved Snack List by clicking HERE and the Kings Wellness Policy which can be found by clicking HERE. (Found on the Food Service area of the Kings Website).

Specials
We will be doing the same rotation schedule as last year --- RED, BLUE, WHITE, GOLD. The first day of school will be a RED day. Please look for more information about specials in your child's homework folder or planner.

School Fees
Please note that school fees are due by September 8th and are $77 for the 2017-2018 school year. Checks should be made payable to KINGS LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT.

ART UPDATE
From Mrs. Hoffert: Although we try to be as clean and neat as possible, painting accidents do happen.  Please try and wear older clothes on art days.  We do have art smocks that all students wear, but again, painting accidents happen.

APRIL UPDATE

Testing Schedule

Just a reminder that we begin the Ohio AIR testing this week.  All tests begin at 9 am so please make sure your child is at school on time.  We ask that students get a good night's sleep the evening before each test and also eat a good breakfast (we will not be having snacks each day until testing is completed).  The schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, April 4 and Wednesday, April 5 - Language Arts/Reading Test
Monday, April 10 and Tuesday, April 11 - Math Test
Wednesday, April 19 and Friday, April 21 - Social Studies Test

Behavior System

Students received their new checkbooks today for the 4th quarter.  We were so pleased that so many reached and exceeded their goal for the 3rd quarter.  A reminder that students will receive $5 per week allowance and earn extra money for positive behavior but lose money for things such as talking in class/line, lost papers, no pencil, not coming to class prepared, missing homework, etc.  Money may be given or taken by any SLE staff member, so students are working on positive behavior throughout the entire building.
