So many things seem to happen between Thanksgiving and Winter Break -- here is a rundown of what is on the calendar as of now:

4th Grade Choir - Performance with 2nd Grade Thursday, December 11, 6:30pm @ SLE (4th grade chorus should report at 6:15)

SLE Snow Shop - PTO is sponsoring this shopping opportunity for students again this year.  4th graders will be going with their reading groups at the following times:

Monday 12/15 - Mrs. Tucker and Mrs. Westley's Classes
Tuesday 12/16 - Mrs. Scruby and Mrs. Clements' Classes
NOTE: Students will be shopping with their READING CLASSES NOT their homeroom class.  The teacher's name listed above is by reading class/

4th Grade Holiday Dance - December 19th, 1:35pm in the gym.

Winter Parties - Please sign up to help with homeroom parents.   They should be contacting you.  Please note that only those parents who are signed up are to attend the party.  Thank you for your cooperation on this new policy.

COATS!!  -  Remember if the temperature is warm enough, students will be going out for recess --- Please make sure your child has a coat and if needed, gloves, scarf and hat to wear each day.  We have noticed may students still wearing shorts and t-shirts.  May of the classrooms are cold and you may want to encourage your child to dress warmer.

Testing Update

This year, students in grades 3-4 will participate in new state assessments to measure their language arts, math and fourth grade social studies achievement.  There area two types of assessments that are required to be given: Performance Based Assessment (PBA) which will be given at about the 75% completion mark of the school year and End of Year (EOY) which will be given around the 90% mark.

We will schedule PBA assessments sometime during the testing window of March 2nd-20th and EOY assessments between April 13-May 15.  All assessments will be taken online using a district-owned device.  Once we have the exact dates for each grade, we will communicate that information.   We hope this advance information is helpful as you plan and schedule appointments.

NO PRE-APPROVED REQUESTS FORMS WILL BE HONORED DURING THE TESTING DATES.  Also, we ask you to try to avoid appointments during these dates as well.  Thank you for your assistance in this matter.

Week of November 17

This week is Anti-bully Week at SLE.  Mrs. Burdine met with the 4th grade classes last week and encouraged students to create posters advertising "Kindness Week" (our theme this year).  Some students also signed up to write and perform raps!  We are very excited that Basketball Jones will be visiting SLE on Thursday afternoon and we will have daily lessons on making good choices to spread kindness and stomp out bullying.

It is time again for THE BIG SWITCH.   This week students will finish up their units in Science and Social Studies (please check planners for final tests) and then making the switch.

Last Week in October - Updates

Report cards for the 1st Quarter were sent home in the Friday Folders this past week.  We ask that you please discuss your child's progress with him or her.   You may want to assist your child in setting some goals for the 2nd quarter, and again, we thank you for your continued partnership in helping in their academic growth.

We have set our 2nd Quarter Behavior Goal:  Students will not receive more than 2 minors.   Reminder that if a student receives 3 minors that is an automatic office referral, which typically results in an afterschool detention.

Included in this is being prepared for class.  If a student forgets materials for class that will result in getting his or her name on the board.  A minor is when a student gets his/her name on the board and receives a check (a second behavior issue that same day).

With a few slips in behavior at the end of the 1st quarter we felt that this was an appropiate goal for the next 9 weeks of the school year.
Just a reminder that school will be closed on Tuesday, November 4th for Teacher Inservice Day.

2nd Quarter!

We have successfully completed the first quarter of the school year and look forward to the second.  Thank you so much to those who met with us at conferences and we look forward to meeting the remainder of you at conferences this Thursday.   We value your partnership and making this year a successful one for your child.

A few things coming up to take note:

1. THE BIG SWITCH! - It is that time again for the students to switch from social studies to science and vice versa.

2. Information was sent home this week from Duke Energy for a free energy kit.  Simply fill out the card and send it back to school.   The homeroom with the most returned earns a special treat from the SLE E-Club.

3. It is BOX TOP time again.  Please send in your BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION this next week.   PTO is sponsoring a contest between the classes.

4. KINDNESS WEEK is coming up.  This year we are selling special T-Shirts that will be personalized for SLE and advertise our theme for Anti-Bully week --- to choose and spread kindness!   Order forms were sent home in the Friday Folder and need to be returned by WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23rd.   Cost per shirt is $10.

5. No School Dates:  We have several during the 2nd Quarter:
November 4 - Inservice Day for teachers
November 26-28 - Conference Exchange Day & Thanksgiving Break
December 22 - January 2 - Winter Break

Week of October 6th

Thank you so much for the donations to the PTO Walk-A-Thon.  The PTO raised over $12,000 and the kids had a great time walking the track on Friday.  We were concerned we might get rained out, but the skies cleared for the 3 hour window we needed to squeeze in the walk.  Thank you again, for your generous donations of money and time to make this even a success!

October 16th and 23rd are Parent/Teacher Conferences at SLE.  Conferences are scheduled with your child's reading teacher.   Look for your scheduled time to come home this week with your child.

                                         Cooler Weather is Here!
Looks like the temps are going to be cooler from here on out.  Unless it is raining, children will be going outside to play for recess.   Please be sure your child has a jacket with him/her and is prepared for outside play.

Week of September 22

The Big Switch!!

This week if your child is currently taking Science they will switch to Social Studies; if your child is currently taking Social Studies then he/she will switch to Science for the remaining portion of the 1st Quarter.

E-Club applications are due on September 30th.  Students interested in belonging to SLE's club devoted to learning about ways to conserve and recycle should write an essay about why they should be part of the group.  (Application forms came home on bright orange paper a couple weeks ago.)  If you are interested and have misplaced your application form, ask your homeroom teacher or see E-Club advisor, Mrs. Scruby.

Homework Reminder
Managing homework is something that 4th grade students work hard to accomplish.   Please check planner daily for homework assignments.   While most assignments are assigned weekly, some are assigned mid-week.   Mid-week assignments are usually smaller and are generally finishing up something that was not completed in class.  Students who have all homework turned in on time earn an extra recess at the end of the day on Friday; those do not, attend a study hall to finish up missing or late work.   The last two weeks, we have seen an increase in the number of students attending study hall and would like see that number decrease (hopefully zero!!) for the remainder of the quarter.

Keep collecting and sending in pledges for the PTO Walk-A-Thon.   Pledges are collected and tallied every Thursday.  Classes compete for weekly prizes for the class that collects the most money that week.   Remember to mark your calendar for the Walk-A-Thon on Friday, October 3rd.

Music Notes
  • Recorder money is due Monday, October 22nd.   $6 for one recorder, $12 for two (one for home and one for school so that it does not have to be transported back and forth for practice at home).
  • Chorus started this past week, however Mrs. Sherby would love to have a few more join the group.   If interested, contact Mrs. Sherby (msherby@kingslocal.net) or your child's homeroom teacher for an application form.

Week of September 15th

Tomorrow (September 16) is Picture Day!   Please remember the picture form and money if you wish to purchase pictures.   Everyone will be photographed, as these photos are used for the yearbooks.

This is the LAST week before "the big switch."   On Monday, Sept. 22, if your student is currently taking Science they will switch to Social Studies; if your child is currently taking Social Studies then he/she will switch to Science for the remaining portion of the 1st Quarter.    Be sure to check the planner for any tests or assignments that are due this week.

Reminder that E-Club applications are due on September 30th.  Applications were sent home last week and are copied on bright orange paper.

Welcome!

Welcome to the SLE 4th grade website! One stop shop for all that is going on with the 4th grade at SLE. In an effort to "go green" and save paper, we will be using this website to communicate important dates and other information that is traditionally shared through classroom newsletters.

At the top you will find buttons that lead to our contact information (phone and email) as well as an individual page for each teacher on our team. Class specific information (for example information about Mrs. Scruby's Language Arts class or Mrs. Westley's Social Studies class) will be posted here. You will also find a tab listed as "Specials" which lists the Specials Schedule (Art, Music, Gym & Library) for each class.

Need information from the Kings Website? Click on the Kings Knights icon on the left. If you would like to check your child's grades, click the Progress Book button that will connect you directly to the Progress Book login page.

We hope this will help improve communication with parents and look forward to a great year!
