Happy New Year!

Month of January Snowman

We hope everyone had a fun filled and restful winter break.  There are a few events in January that you should note --- most of all that the 2nd quarter ends this week.   This marks the halfway point of 4th grade and grade cards will be coming home next week.   Also, students will be making the "big switch" between science and social studies.

January Happenings:

January 8 - End of the 2nd Quarter
January 11 - Teacher Workday - NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS
January 19 - Martin Luther King Jr. Day - NO SCHOOL

Weather Reminders

We are entering the time in the school year where we can anticipate inclement weather. If the Kings School District is on a two-hour delay due to inclement weather, the schedule for the school day (Monday-Friday) is 10:40 AM-3:20 PM for grades K-4There will be no breakfast served on days when there is a two-hour delay. We will follow our normal lunch schedule, which starts at 11:00 AM.

There will be NO Early Release if a two-hour delay occurs on a Wednesday

In the event that school is dismissed early because of changing weather conditions, it would be good for parents to make arrangements for their children ahead of time as students will follow their normal dismissal routine for the day; whether that is riding the bus home or being picked-up by their parents.

Kings Kids after-school program will not be open if school is dismissed early. Parents who utilize Kings Kids will be instructed to come to school to pick up their child. When school is closed or released early due to inclement weather, all evening school activities are cancelled.

Outdoor Recess

Please make sure that your child dresses for the weather daily -- with coats, hats, gloves, etc., as we will be having the students play outside for recess as long as the temperature is above 32 degrees.

The Days of December

The days of December are here and there are numerous events that we want to make you aware of as we head toward our 2 week winter break.

Baby It's Cold Outside!

Not just a song, but the truth!  The student handbook states: "Children go outside for recess when the weather is dry and the temperature is 32-degrees or above unless a students is kept indoors by their teacher, or if a parent has sent in a note requesting indoor recess for medical reasons."  PLEASE make sure your child has a coat and if necessary hat/gloves as we will be going out for recess daily.

Upcoming Events:

This Week:
Tuesday 12/8: Students who are members of the 4th grade chorus will visit River's Bend to sing at the holiday luncheon.  This is such a special event for them.  Please remember to wear your chorus outfit for school that day.

Thursday 12/10: 2nd Grade/4th Grade Chorus concert - This is just for those participating in chorus.

Next week:
Snow Shop: Again PTO is sponsoring a little shop here at school for students to shop for family members.   Shopping times have been scheduled during our reading times, so please check your child's planners for their exact day to shop. PTO is also offering a shop night on Thursday, Dec.17 from 4-7pm.  The shop is still seeking volunteers to help out.  If you are able to lend a hand please click HERE and sign up for a time.  Thank you!

Snappy Tomato Pizza Night - December 16 -- Order pizza and support SLE PTO.

4th Grade Dance: Again this year, the 4th grade is learning some special dances to entertain the student body on the last day before holiday break.  Parents may attend.  The dances are scheduled for 1:45 on December 18th and will take place in the gym.

Holiday Gift Exchange: 4th graders will have the opportunity to participate in a small gift exchange for our class parties.  Essentially, they will be putting together goody bags that can be taken home after the party.  Small items such as candy, pencils etc may be brought in to fill the bags of their classmates.   Individual letters were sent home from each homeroom outlining more information and providing the number of students in their homerooms.

Holiday Parties - Homerooms will be having parties in the afternoon of December 18th. Due to limited space in the parking lot (and being able to clear the lot prior to dismissal) the office has asked that only those parents who are running the party attend.

November Update

Kindness Week

Heroes are born every day. Reblog if you’re committed to being someone’s hero when it comes to bullying.

So many wonderful things happening this week to promote kindness and being a hero to someone everyday.   Today, kids watched a Kid President video (you can view it HERE) and the SLE staff dressed as their heroes.  Students were challenged to think about who their hero is -- who do they know that inspires kindness, doing their best and putting other's first?  Students will have the opportunity to dress as their hero and share with their classmates on Friday, November 20.

Of course we are looking forward to the return of Basketball Jones on Thursday, November 19 -- and if your child ordered an SLE Superhero T-Shirt, he/she should wear it that day.

Did your child tell you about the super cool water bottle that was on their desk when they got to school today?

Parenting in the Digital Age  - Class for Parents

The Kings School Counselors are excited to bring a parenting class on technology and media use.  Please join us on Saturday, December 5th from 8:30-11:00 AM at Columbia Intermediate School.  This program is presented by Beach Acres Parenting Center and features a local technology and education expert from Cincinnati Bell.  Please CLICK HERE see the flyer for more information.

November Happenings

Veteran's Day at SLE

We are excited to honor our veterans this Wednesday.  Students will be putting together a wall of honor, beginning the day with a special assembly and many veterans will be joining us for lunch.  In addition, we will be honoring those who are currently serving with Operation Gratitude.  Students have been bringing in a small portion (sometimes a large portion!) of their Halloween candy to send to those currently serving in our armed forces.  The generosity of our students is awesome!   Donations can be turned in through Tuesday, November 10.

District Math Night

Do you have questions about what your child is learning in math?  Does Common Core math have you scratching your head?  join us:
6:30-7:30 pm
Thursday, November 12th
at Kings Mills Elementary School
for a K-4 Math Night!
You will learn about the K-4 math standards, your child’s math program, what your child is doing in math class and how you can support your child at home. To help us prepare, we ask that if you plan to attend, please complete this short electronic survey using this link K-4 Math Night Survey.

Kindness Week

Kindness week is rapidly approaching! This year it will be Nov. 16th - 20th and the theme is superheros.   If you ordered a t-shirt, they will be passed out on Friday, Nov. 13.  Mrs. Burdine has some pretty cool things planned including the return of Basketball Jones on Thursday the 19th.   Should be a fantastic week!  Stay tuned for more details.

Reading Really Adds Up!

Why Read 20 Minutes A day? This should go home to every parent at the beginning of the year, but I'd highlight the test score part more!:

Thank you to the parents who met with us this week.  We enjoyed meeting with you to discuss your child's successes and make plans to assist your child where they need to grow.   For those scheduled to come this week, we look forward to meeting with you.  Please remember that you conference is scheduled with your child's language arts teacher.   As always, your partnership makes for a more successful year for your child.

The Big Switch

This week, we will again have "The Big Switch".  This means that if your child had Science class for the past several weeks, they will now have Social Studies for the first portion of the 2nd quarter.  Likewise, if they previously had Social Studies, they now have Science class.  Mrs. Scruby teaches Science and Mrs. Westley is the Social Studies teacher.

Special Events this Week

We have several special things scheduled this week.

Monday:
  • Author Visit! We are excited author J. Scott Savage will be visiting SLE.  The theme of the assembly is The Power of Creativity. Mr. Savage will talk  about kids who made the world a better place by using their imaginations. He also will teach the students how to come up with an amazing story idea in less than five minutes using a hero, a goal, obstacles, and consequences of success and failure.
Friday
  • Vehicle Day: Students will be able to tour many different modes of transportation that Mrs. Burdine has lined up for this annual SLE event.

Thank you to all gave their time and donations.  We had a beautiful day to walk and raised some great money for SLE PTO.

IOWA Test

4th graders will be taking the IOWA Test this week.   In Kings, we use this test as a screener for gifted identification.  Testing will happen for a short time each day during your child's reading block and do not anticipate this causing a major disruption to instruction.

Book Fair

Students will visit the book fair during their regularly scheduled library times during this week.  We will have a family night on Wednesday, October 7 at 6pm.  Remember your child goes to library with their reading teacher.  Again this year, you will have the opportunity to shop our Book Fair online beginning Wednesday, Sept. 30.  To access the order site, click HERE.
